DND seeks additional P188 million funding for Marawi military camp

Department of National Defense officials asked a Senate panel for an additional P188 million in funding for the construction of a military camp in Marawi City as the area undergoes rehabilitation after the 2017 siege.

During Friday's Senate hearing on the proposed P297,136,636,000 budget for the DND, Senator Francis Tolentino asked department officials if they needed more funds for the project.

Philippine Army commander Lieutenant General Andres Centino said the budget was provided but was reallocated in compliance with a Department of Budget and Management resolution.

“The amount of P188.16 million [had been allocated for] this project. We establish, develop the camp in Marawi in support of construction of facilities of the infantry brigade there,” Centino explained.

Tolentino lamented that though Marawi City schools and churches were being reconstructed and rehabilitated, the military facilities were being left behind.

“Ang pangit kung maiwan ang Philippine Army doon (It would be awful if Philippine Army would be left behind there) in not so good condition," said the senator.
