PCG coordinates with LGUs for Rai operations

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is coordinating with local government units in the preparations for possible evacuations, rescue operations, and relief missions in areas that will be affected by Severe Tropical Storm Rai.

In a statement on Tuesday, PCG Commandant CG Admiral Leopoldo Laroya said he directed the district, station, and sub-station commanders in Caraga and the Western Visayas to activate their deployable response groups and quick response teams, and inspect available search and rescue assets and equipment ahead of a possible Rai landfall.

“We all know the drill. I am confident that our men and women will be able to serve our fellow kababayans with patriotism, compassion, and fear of God. Let us all pray for the safety of our first responders so they could serve those who are in need,” Laroya said.

He added that PCG commanders in areas that will likely be affected will issue appropriate maritime safety advisories to fishermen, ship crews, and other maritime stakeholders within the day. Coast guard vessels that are “ready for sail” were also tasked to take shelter.

According to PAGASA, the Eastern Visayas and Mindanao may be placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Number 1 on Tuesday due to the Rai, which will be called Odette once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

As of 10 a.m., the severe tropical storm was 1,165 km east of Mindanao.

It had maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 115 kph.

Meanwhile, PCG units in areas that will not be directly affected by the storm were tasked to work with the PCG Auxiliary in repacking food, medical supplies, hygiene kits, and other relief packages to ensure the quick provisioning of affected communities.

“Let us monitor closely and coordinate proactively to ensure the safety of lives so we could all celebrate Christmas with our families and loved ones,” Laroya added. — DVM, GMA News
