WFP assists in relief effort for Odette victims
The World Food Programme (WFP), along with USAID, is working with Philippine government departments in assisting in the relief effort for Typhoon Odette victims.
On Monday, the Department of Information and Communications Technology, in collaboration with WFP Asia Pacific, deployed two Mobile Operations Vehicles for Emergencies to Surigao and Ormoc to facilitate access to electricity and internet for those responding to the aftermath of Typhoon Odette.
WFP information technology officers and a DICT team also installed VSAT kits in Surigao City to provide connectivity to the Philippine government for communication and coordination of relief efforts.
Earlier, WFP Asia Pacific, through the support of USAID Philippines, assisted the Department of Social Welfare and Development with the transportation of 10,000 family food packs using six 10-wheeler trucks.
The government food packs were taken to Butuan City where the packs were distributed to the thousands of families who had been affected by Odette.
More than 1.8 million people were affected by the onslaught of Odette, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Monday.
The areas most affected by Odette were northeastern Mindanao, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Palawan.
