Reported death toll due to Odette now at 407; 66 more missing — NDRRMC


The total reported deaths due to Typhoon Odette has climbed further to 407, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Monday.

In its latest situational report released at 8 a.m., the NDRRMC said the death toll increased from 403 to 407, of which, 75 were confirmed while 332 are still for validation.

Majority of these came from Region 7 with 220 reported deaths, followed by Caraga with 71.

There are still 66 people reported missing while the number of reported injured remains at 1,261.

In Dinagat and Siargao islands alone, nine people have died and hundreds have fallen ill with diarrhea, with aid officials warning of a health crisis as millions struggle to secure clean water and food, the Department of Health - Caraga said Monday.

Evacuation centers

Meanwhile, almost a month after the typhoon’s onslaught in the Visayas and Mindanao, there are still 60,736 families or 229,424 individuals staying in 1,207 evacuation centers.

As of Monday, Odette has still affected 1,807,532 families or 5,972,511 individuals from 5,887 barangays in Mimaropa, Regions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Caraga, and BARMM.

A total of 1,360,203 houses were also affected in these areas—368,441 of which were totally damaged while 991,762 were partially damaged. The estimated total amount of damage is P30,699,018.

Further, NDRRMC reported that some 271 cities and municipalities out of 357 have restored their power supply, while four areas out of 26 have restored their water supply.

Communication lines are, however, still intermittent in 159 areas in Mimaropa, Region 7, 8, 9, 10, Caraga, and BARMM.

At least nine roads—eight from Region 7 and one from Region 10— and one bridge from Region 7 were still impassable, the NDRRMC noted.

Six out of eight airports have also resumed operations in Region 10, Caraga, and Mimaropa.

Sixteen out of 25 domestic flights also resumed while no international flights were canceled due to the typhoon, the same NDRRMC report said.

There were also 83 out of 129 seaports that resumed operations in Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Region 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and Caraga.

However, a total of 343 seaport passengers and 143 rolling cargoes were reported stranded in Mimaropa, Region 6, 8, 9, 10, and Caraga.

The NDRRMC said the estimated cost of Odette’s damage to infrastructure is at P17,712,899,940.8.

In the agriculture sector, a total of 111,491.4989 hectares of crop area, 1,554,266 livestock and poultry, and 6,186.2 agricultural infrastructure and equipment were affected by Odette.

The estimated cost of damage to agriculture is at P10,963,193,349 incurred in Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Region 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and Caraga.

Meanwhile, 464 classes and 306 work remain suspended in several areas.

The NDRRMC noted that a total of P654,708,021.53 worth of assistance were provided to Mimaropa, Region 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, and Caraga. — RSJ, GMA News
