Philippines reports 17,677 new COVID-19 cases; active tally at 247K

The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday recorded 17,677 new COVID-19 cases increasing the nationwide COVID-19 tally to 3,459,646.

According to the DOH’s latest bulletin, the new cases brought the country's active case count to 247,451 of which 7,464 are asymptomatic; 235,181 are mild;  2,996 are moderate; 1,502 are severe; and 308 are in critical condition.

The Health department said of the 17,677 reported cases on Tuesday, 17,157 or 97% occurred within the recent 14 days from January 12 to 25.

Among the top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were Region 4-A with 2,629 or 15%, followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,570 or 15% and Region 3 with 2,266 or 13%.

A total of 33,144 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease, bringing the total tally to 3,158,597.

The number of deaths climbed to 53,598 with 79 new fatalities.

Meanwhile, the Philippines’ COVID-19 positivity rate was at 37.2%, which is higher than the World Health Organization's requirement target of less than 5% positivity rate.

It means that there is a high transmission rate of the virus. The total conducted COVID-19 tests were at 43,874.

Based on the latest data, it showed that 50% of 3,900 intensive care unit (ICU) beds for COVID-19 patients nationwide are in use.

At least 53% of the 14,800 ward beds in the country were utilized, while 51% of the 4,100 ward beds in the NCR were in use.

The DOH said all laboratories were operational since January 23, while there were six laboratories that failed to submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System.

It reported 87 duplicates were removed from the total case count. Of these, 52 are recoveries and  one death.

Meanwhile, at least 35 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.—LDF, GMA News
