Comelec warns public vs. fake social media accounts of poll commissioners
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday warned the public against social media users impersonating as poll commissioners or officials.
In a statement, the Comelec told the public to report any Facebook friend request purporting to be coming from a Comelec commissioner or other poll officials for community standards violations.
The poll body also urged the public to report Twitter profiles impersonating the key officials of the Comelec for violation of the platform’s impersonation policy.
“These blatant attempts to steal the online identity of Comelec officials are potentially part of a broader attempt to undermine the integrity of the elections,” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said.
Jimenez said the poll body is already coordinating closely with the social media platforms so these accounts could be taken down immediately.
Apart from this, Jimenez said they are prepared to take legal actions against the perpetrators. — Hana Bordey/RSJ, GMA News
