Philippines logs 18,191 new COVID-19 cases; active tally at 226K


The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday reported 18,191 new COVID-19 infections bringing the country’s COVID-19 tally to 3,493,447.

Based on the DOH’s latest case bulletin, the active infections stood at 226,521.

Of these cases 6,875 are asymptomatic, 214,857 are mild, 2,971 are moderate, 1,509 are severe, and 309 are in critical condition.

 

 

The Health department said of the 18,191 reported cases on Thursday, 17,625 or 97% occurred within the recent 14 days from January 14 to 27, 2022.

Among the top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were Region 4-A with 2,101 or 12%, followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,073 or 12% and Region 11 with 2,011 or 11%.

The DOH said the total recoveries climbed to 3,213,190 after 22,014 more patients recovered from the viral disease.

Meanwhile, 74 new fatalities brought the death toll to 53,736.

The Philippines’ COVID-19 positivity rate was at 35.2%, slightly lower than the 35.8% recorded on Wednesday.

However, both are higher than the World Health Organization's requirement target of less than 5% positivity rate. The total conducted COVID-19 tests were 61,013.

The data also showed that 49% of 3,800 intensive care unit (ICU) beds for COVID-19 patients nationwide are in use.

At least 51% of the 15,700 ward beds in the country were utilized, while 47% of the 4,500 ward beds in the National Capital Region (NCR) were in use.

According to the latest report, all laboratories were not operational since January 25, while two laboratories failed to submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System.

The DOH also reported 37 duplicates were removed from the total case count. Of these, 17 are recoveries and two deaths.

Meanwhile, at least 26 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.—LDF, GMA News
