Another PNP personnel dies due to COVID-19; death toll now at 127

The number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the Philippine National Police (PNP) has climbed to 127 on Tuesday as another personnel died due to the disease.

In a statement, PNP chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said the latest fatality is a 39-year-old policewoman assigned in Zamboanga City.

Citing her medical records submitted to Camp Crame, the PNP said the policewoman consulted their Station Health Unit over high creatinine on her laboratory result on January 17.

On January 24, she underwent an RT-PCR test which results turned positive. She was immediately brought to the nearest hospital, according to the PNP.

On January 26, she was pronounced dead by her attending physician.

Citing initial investigation, the PNP said the fatality also had comorbidities due to renal disease and diabetes.

"The PNP leadership assures the family of the PNP personnel of full financial support and social benefits, my condolences", Carlos said.

"For almost two years battling with COVID-19, we have highlighted the good deeds of our policemen and women, giving recognition to the sacrifices they have made. We are moved by your selfless service to those who were affected by this disastrous event, even though we also lost many of our personnel due to the deadly virus," he added.

Based on the PNP data, 208 new COVID-cases were reported, bringing the total number of cases to 48,353.

A total of 46,737 cases have already recovered from the disease while 1,489 are still active cases, according to the PNP.

Meanwhile, a total of 218,487 (97.02%) of its personnel are already fully vaccinated against COVID-19; 5,798 (2.57%) are still awaiting their second dose; and 89,119 (40.79%) have received booster shots.

The PNP said 917 (0.41%) personnel have yet to be vaccinated.

On Monday, the Philippines reported 14,546 new COVID-19 infections, pushing the country's total caseload to 3,560,202. Of the total, 190,818 are still active cases.

With 112 new fatalities, the death toll due to COVID-19 in the country pushed to 54,003. —Joviland Rita/KG/KBK, GMA News
