Mangondato wants death penalty back if elected president

Presidential candidate Faisal Mangondato said Wednesday that he is in favor of the re-imposition of the capital punishment, citing Islam law.

“Diyan sa ating batas, dapat po, kung tayo ay magpapataw ng kasalanan sa tao, ay ‘yung gumawa po na naaayon sa timbang ng kasalanan ng tao,” he said in a Catholic E-Forum hosted by Radio Veritas.

(In our law, we should impose punishment to a person according to the weight of his or her sin.)

He said that crimes that are punishable by death will be identified, if he wins the upcoming May 9 elections.

The Katipunan ng Kamalayang Kayumanggi’s presidential bet, however, emphasized that the law that would mandate death penalty should be fair for everyone so that justice will be served accordingly.

He also pointed out that there should still be due process of the law even to those who committed grave crimes, including people involved in illegal drugs trade.

“Kailangan litisin ‘yung mga pusher ... withe the due process of law. Kung ito’y talagang magiging cancer na ng society, diyan pwedeng patawan ng malaking parusa,” he said.

(Drug pushers should be punished based on due process of law. If they really become a cancer to society, then a big punishment can be imposed.)

“Pero ‘yung death penalty, kung maaari, ay gamitin natin na ‘yung ating batas ay maging patas sa lahat ng tao—kriminal man o hindi kriminal ay maibigay sa kanila ‘yung justice na kinakailangan na makuha nila,” he added.

[The death penalty must be in accordance with the law and must be fair to all to serve justice that everyone deserves.]

Earlier at The Jessica Soho Presidential Interviews, Vice President Leni Robredo, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Senators Manny Pacquiao and Panfilo Lacson all said they are against the re-imposition of death penalty in the country.

Meanwhile, former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. had said that he would consider pushing for the re-imposition of the capital punishment for hardened or incorrigible criminals. —LBG, GMA News
