Comelec should resume working on voters' IDs right after Eleksyon 2022 —commissioner

Comelec should resume working on voters' IDs right after Eleksyon 2022

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) needs to resume its efforts in providing voter’s IDs immediately after the May elections, its Commissioner George Garcia said on Tuesday.

Interviewed on Dobol B TV, Garcia pointed out that voter's IDs can be used to verify the identity of voters during elections.

“Yan ay mukhang naitigil ng Comelec. Pero pagkatapos na pagkatapos ng election na ito ay kailangang mabuhay natin 'yang ID. Dagdag identification pa 'yan sa ating mga kababayan lalo na 'yung mga botante,” he said.

(It seems Comelec has stopped working on the voter’s ID. But right after the elections, this should be resumed. This is also an additional identification for our countrymen especially voters.)

He made the statement when asked about some layers of security in light of the concern that some deceased individuals may still be on the list of voters.

On Monday, the Comelec revealed that voters who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic were still on the list, adding that some of these cases could be used to question the credibility of the elections.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez explained that the names of the deceased are being removed from the voter’s list based on records submitted by the local civil registrar.

“Ang delisting process kasi natin ay dumadaan tayo through the civil registry. So, kung hindi tayo ma-inform ng civil registry tungkol sa mga pumanaw na, hindi rin natin natatanggal,” Jimenez said.
