MMDA launches free solar charging station for e-bikes, e-scooters

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will open to the public its free solar charging station for electric bikes and electric scooters on June 27.

In a statement, the MMDA said its solar charging station at the new MMDA head office building in Barangay Ugong, Pasig City, will be available from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said the project, which was launched on Monday, would help ease the burden of the public from the price hikes on petroleum products.

“Putting up free charging stations for electronic vehicles such as e-bikes and e-scooters would encourage the public to use alternative mode of transportation and at the same time help them save expenses from high fuel cost,” he said.

According to Artes, he is planning to build a similar charging station at the MMDA headquarters in Orense, Makati City, to accommodate those who are traversing EDSA.

Users must bring their own charging cords and cables, the MMDA said. Charging an e-bike will take around six to eight hours, depending on the vehicle’s battery, it added.

Three solar panels with built-in inverter will be the main power source of the station with a total of six 220V charging outlets.

In case the solar energy harvested will be inadequate to power the e-bikes, the station will tap into the main power grid of the building to compensate for the shortage, according to the MMDA.

All excess electricity being harnessed by the solar panels will be distributed back to the building, it added.

Meanwhile, Artes appealed to e-bikers and e-scooter drivers to adhere to the Land Transportation Office's administrative order the Consolidated Guidelines in the Classification, Registration, and Operation of All Types of Electric Motor Vehicles to ensure their safety. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
