14 of 17 regions exceed 2021 dengue case average —DOH


Fourteen out of 17 regions in the Philippines have exceeded their epidemic threshold for dengue, the Department of Health (DOH) announced Wednesday.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the country reported 39,705 cases from January 1 to June 4, 31% higher compared to cases during the same period last year.

Vergeire said most of the cases reported were from Central Visayas, Central Luzon, and the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Meanwhile, the country recorded 9,814 cases from May 8 to June 4. The Health undersecretary said most cases were from Central Luzon, Central Visayas, and Calabarzon.

“‘Yun pong ibang mga regions, we are already noting increasing trends in the recent comorbidity weeks. So 14 out of 17 regions na po ang nakapag exceed ng kanilang epidemic thresholds for the past four weeks,” Vergeire said in a media briefing.

Vergeire previously said the agency compares the current number of cases to the same period last year to determine if an area has exceeded its threshold.

Meanwhile, she said the country has recorded 202 fatalities since January.

Of this, 29 were recorded in January, 36 in February, 34 in March, 43 in April, 48 in May, and two in June.

Vergeire advised the public to follow the 4S strategy which is to search and destroy breeding places, secure self-protection, seek early consultation, and support fogging or spraying in hotspot areas.—AOL, GMA News
