Catholic schools in the Philippines condemn Ateneo shooting

The association of Catholic schools in the Philippines condemn the shooting incident that took place at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) in Quezon City on Sunday, according to a post on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.

The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP), in the CBCP post, called the shooting incident that resulted in the death of three people including former Lamita Basilan mayor Rose Furigay  a “terrible act of violence” that turned the graduation ceremony into “terror, trauma, and death.”

CEAP President Sr. Ma. Marissa Viri, RVM expressed “profound sympathy and solace to the victims, the bereaved, and those who were physically and emotionally injured by this unfortunate and unnecessary event.”

ADMU is among 1,525 member-schools of the association of Catholic schools that was founded in 1941.

“We call on our brothers and sisters in the CEAP community to offer our prayers to the victims and their families,” she added.

Aside from Furigay, the other fatalities were her aide Victor Capistrano, and school security guard Jeneven Bandiala.

In a post on social media, the Ateneo de Manila community expressed "sincerest condolences to Jeneven's family and friends."

The University is also extending financial assistance to Bandiala's family and has opened a scan-to-pay donation channel.

"All donations will be given to Jeneven's family. We thank you in advance for your help," the school said in a statement.

"Once again, we condemn this act of violence, and we hope justice is served. Let us keep Jeneven, as well as Rose Furigay and Victor Capistrano, in our prayers." -- BAP, GMA News
