Recto named Deputy Speaker

Former senator and current Batangas Representative Ralph Recto was elected a Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

Recto's election as Deputy Speaker ensued after the oath taking of Las Piñas Representative Camille Villar, also as one of the House's Deputy Speakers.

Recto then took oath before Speaker Martin Romualdez of Leyte. Present were his wife, former Batangas congresswoman Vilma Santos, and their son, Ryan Christian.

Recto backed former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno during the 2022 presidential race.

Two other lawmakers were also elected and took their oath as Deputy Speaker on Wednesday: Aurelio Gonzales of Pampanga and Duke Frasco of Cebu.

Gonzales is from PDP-Laban party, which backed Romualdez's speakership bid.

Frasco is the husband of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and the son-in-law of Cebu governor Gwen Garcia.

Both Gonzales and Frasco supported now-President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the 2022 presidential race.

With the election of Recto, Gonzales and Frasco, there are now nine Deputy Speakers, which also include:

  • Gloria Arroyo of Pampanga (House Senior Deputy Speaker)
  • Camille Villar of Las Piñas
  • Isidro Ungab of Davao
  • Roberto Puno of Antipolo
  • Christine Singson of Ilocos Sur and
  • Raymond Mendoza of TUCP party-list.
