DILG calls on LGUs to intensify campaign for nat'l ID registration

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday ordered local government units to exert more efforts in encouraging their constituents to register for national ID.

“We again call on LGUs, especially the barangays, to extend their full support to the President and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in the National ID campaign, “ DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos said in a statement.

“Enjoin your constituents to get a National ID for easier validation and authentication of identity in their transactions with government offices, banks, and other private entities.”

Abalos advised barangay captains to disseminate printed and electronic materials, make roving announcements, and share updates from the official Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) social media pages.

According to the DILG, only 75.3% or 69.254 million of the 92 million target registrants have signed up for the PhilSys, based on the data from the PSA as of July 1.

The DILG made the call in line with the pledge of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July to fast-track the delivery of almost 50 million IDs by the end of 2022.

In July, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) said it is organizing “plaza-type” distributions of national IDs that owners failed to receive during delivery.

PHLPost postmaster general and CEO Norman Fulgencio said they are coordinating with concerned barangay captains to set activities during weekends for the distribution of unclaimed national IDs.

According to him, only 14,033,000 have been delivered to owners as of July 8. Some 700,000 national IDs in PHLPost have yet to be delivered, he added. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
