Philippines logs 2,318 new COVID-19 cases; active tally at 28,525


The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday recorded 2,318 new COVID-19 cases, increasing the total nationwide caseload to 3,874,641.

This is the third day with fewer than 3,000 new infections.

Based on the DOH’s latest data, the country’s active cases slightly decreased to 28,525 from 29,807 on Saturday. This is the second straight day with fewer than 30,000 active cases.

The number of recoveries climbed to 3,784,449 while the death toll rose by 54 to 61,667.

According to the DOH, the regions with the most cases in the last two weeks were the National Capital Region with 11,607 followed by Calabarzon with 5,956 and Central Luzon with 3,916.

The Health Department said at least 18,084 individuals were tested, while 309 testing labs submitted data on August 27.

Bed occupancy in the country was at 27.7%, with 8,054 beds occupied, while 21,057 were vacant.

Earlier in the day, OCTA Research said that the seven-day COVID-19 case average in the country had declined by 15% from last week’s 3,487 to 2,959 per day as of August 27.

In a tweet, OCTA fellow Dr. Guido David noted that the one-week average was at its highest at 4,071 two weeks ago.

The country’s reproduction number also slightly decreased to 0.91 on August 24 from 0.96 on August 17.
