Senate hands UK envoy reso expressing condolence over Queen Elizabeth II's death

The Senate of the Philippines on Monday handed British Ambassador Laure Nicole Stephanie Beaufils a copy of the resolution expressing the chamber's condolences on the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Last Monday, the Senate adopted Senate Resolution 198 honoring Queen Elizabeth II's life.

"The state funeral of her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, will take place at Westminster Abbey today. We pay tribute to the Queen's extraordinary reign and her majesty's remarkable life of duty and service as head of state of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland and head of the Commonwealth," Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said.

"She will always be remembered as a symbol of stability who played a crucial role in our country's history amidst these changing and challenging times. We, therefore, are honored to be joined here today by her excellency Laurien Nicole Stephanie Beaufils, his majesty's ambassador to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, who agreed to accept on behalf of the family Senate Resolution No 14 which this chamber unanimously adopted last Monday, September 12, 2022," he added.

On September 8, Buckingham Palace announced the queen's death in her Scottish summer residence following nearly a year of failing health. She was 96.

As scheduled on September 19, the queen’s coffin is set to be taken in procession to Westminster Abbey for the state funeral at 11 a.m. (1000 GMT).

Heads of state across the globe are expected to attend the event, including US President Joe Biden.

The coffin will be brought to Windsor for a committal service at St. George’s Chapel after the funeral, followed by a private interment service in the evening.

The Philippines will be represented by Irene Marcos-Araneta, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s sister, at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. — DVM, GMA News
