US delivers food packs, shelter tarps for Karding-affected families


The United States has delivered family food packs and shelter tarpaulins for the affected families of Typhoon Karding, according to the US Embassy in the Philippines on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Embassy said it has deployed five trucks to swiftly deliver food packs and at least 3,000 shelter tarpaulins to affected families in Calabarzon and Central Luzon with the help of the World Food Programme and IOM Philippines.

The Embassy said the USAID Philippines is also supporting the national emergency telecommunications and logistic operations.

“[The] US will continue to work with the Philippine government and partners to help affected Filipinos following the onslaught of Karding,” it added.

In a tweet, Japan Ambassador to the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko expressed his sympathy to the typhoon victims, especially the death of five rescue workers in Bulacan.

 

 

“It is heartbreaking to know its devastating aftermath to many Filipinos' livelihood & the lives lost, esp. the death of five rescue workers in Bulacan. Let us hold on together in these tough times,” the Japanese envoy said.

Australian Ambassador-designate to the Philippines Hae Kyong Yu expressed support for the recovery efforts in typhoon-hit areas.

 

 

“Australia sends its heartfelt sympathy to the communities affected by Typhoon Karding. We are saddened by the loss of lives and stand ready to support recovery efforts in the affected areas,” Yu said in a tweet.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday reported the fatalities due to Karding has increased from five to eight.

Of the eight reported fatalities, five were rescuers who drowned in San Miguel, Bulacan. Two additional fatalities were reported from Zambales and one was reported from Quezon, the NDRRMC said, adding these reports are still up for verification.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Tuesday said a total of 122,725 affected individuals were being monitored by the department in coordination with the local government units (LGUs).

The typhoon dumped heavy rains and caused flooding as it traversed the Luzon landmass, before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday night.—LDF, GMA News
