Solon proposes mandatory drug tests for actors, Robin says it's violation of human rights
Surigao del Norte Representative Robert Ace Barbers on Monday called for mandatory drug testing on actors as part of the government's anti-illegal drugs drive.
Barbers, House dangerous drugs panel chairperson, made the proposal in light of the arrest of actor Dominic Roco and four others in a drug bust in Quezon City.
"They are being idolized by the youth. If they hear that their idols are involved in illegal drugs, it may influence them to do the same," Barbers said in a CNN Philippines interview.
He then said that producers, directors, and networks should require their actors, actresses, and production personnel to undergo drug tests.
"The test shouldn't cost more than P500, and producers pay so much for talent fees. The production staff can have periodic drug tests during a project," Barbers pointed out.
"The PDEA (Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency) or PNP (Philippine National Police) can issue a clearance, somewhat like an NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) clearance when getting a job," he added.
Philippine National Police chief Police General Rodolfo Azurin Jr. supported Barber's suggestion.
He also encouraged networks to make drug tests a requirement for their talents.
Actor-turned-lawmaker Senator Robin Padilla, meanwhile, opposed the proposal, saying this is tantamount to violation of human rights.
"I am one in seeking to protect our fellow Filipinos from the ill effects of illegal drugs. This includes my fellow workers in the showbiz industry. However, we cannot oblige anyone to undergo a drug test, as it is tantamount to violating their human rights," he said in a statement.
Padilla said he supports voluntary drug tests for their safety and well-being.
"It would also be best if the employers shouldered the expenses for such drug tests," he added.
Further, the neophyte senator also suggested that government officials and employees should undergo drug testing to set a good example.—AOL, GMA News
