Marcos signs law moving barangay, SK polls to October 2023

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has signed into law the measure postponing the December 2022 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls to the last Monday of October 2023.

Marcos signed Republic Act 11935 on October 10.

According to the new law, all incumbent barangay and SK officials must serve until their successors are elected or they are earlier removed or suspended for cause.

The elected barangay and SK officials' terms of office begin at noon on November 30, 2023.

The next elections will then be held after three years.

In a statement, Commission on Elections Chairperson George Erwin Garcia said they would comply with the law even as they continue with the preparations for the polls.

Garcia said the postponement would allow the Comelec to continue voter registration to ensure greater participation of citizens in the elections.

“The Commission will release an announcement regarding an adjustment of the calendar of activities at the soonest possible time. We shall also revisit our existing and planned procurement contracts related to the barangay and SK elections and act accordingly with the best interest of all parties in mind,” he said.

"This postponement also gives this Commission an opportunity to further institute education and information programs for the benefit of our electorate and prospective barangay and SK election candidates." — VBL, GMA News
