Over 10,000 people affected due to Obet —NDRRMC

A total of 10,894 individuals were affected in Northern Luzon due to Tropical Depression Obet, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Sunday.

Based on its 8 a.m. situational report, NDRRMC said that most of the affected people or 9,974 of them came from 51 barangays in Cagayan Valley.

This was followed by 800 people or 249 families in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and 120 people or 35 families in Ilocos Region.

As of Sunday, 518 displaced people or 155 families remained in 10 evacuation centers, while 746 displaced people or 189 families were staying outside of evacuation centers.

At least 1,063 individuals or 331 families were also preemptively evacuated in Cagayan Valley due to Obet.

The tropical depression also resulted in six flooding incidents, two rain-induced landslides, and one soil erosion in Cagayan Valley.

Nine roads in Cagayan Valley and four in CAR are currently impassable.

NDRRMC said that a total of P66,570 worth of assistance were provided to affected residents in Ilocos Region and CAR.

In a Super Radyo dzBB interview on Sunday, NDRRMC spokesperson Assistant Secretary Bernardo Alejandro IV said there were no reported casualties yet due to Obet, and the deaths of the two other fatalities were caused by a different weather disturbance.

“General observation lang po, medyo mahina lang po siya at onti lang ang directly affected nito. Tayo ay nagpapasalamat na medyo mahina lang talaga siya,” he added.

(Our general observation is Obet is a bit weak and only a few were directly affected by it. We are thankful that it is only a bit weak.)

Obet exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday afternoon, state weather bureau PAGASA said. —KG, GMA News
