Japan, Philippines want VFA for conduct of military exercises — Faustino

The Philippines and Japan would like to enter into an agreement to conduct military exercises in the country, Department of National Defense (DND) chief Jose Faustino Jr. said Monday.

At a press conference, Faustino said that currently, Japanese troops have been participating in military exercises as observers.

“Japan and the Philippines would like to have a VFA (visiting forces agreement) in order for the Japanese troops to conduct exercises in the Philippines. Right now they cannot. They are just observers,” he said.

According to Faustino, the countries share common interest in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Asked how the possible agreement will help the Philippines in securing the WPS, Faustino said these agreements are not directed towards another country but for national interest.

“We do it based on our national interest, we forge partnerships with other countries,” he said.

Faustino made the statement after senators expressed support for the possible VFA with Japan and the Philippines. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
