Face mask, social distancing still a must at some churches as Simbang Gabi starts

With the start of the anticipated Simbang Gabi on Thursday, December 15, 2022, most churches are already at full capacity. However, mass-goers are still required to follow health and safety protocols such as social distancing and wearing facemasks.

Mariz Umali reported on "24 Oras" that some churches, such as the Manila Cathedral and Quiapo Church, expect more people to attend mass this year compared to last year.

Meanwhile, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and the Philippine National Police Air Unit (PNP-Au) carried out strict security measures in various churches in Metro Manila.

“Kasama na yan sa pagbabantay namin sa security coverage sa pagpasok ng simbang gabi,” said NCRPO spokesperson Police Lieutenant Colonel Dexter Versola.

(We also monitor the security coverage for Simbang Gabi.)

About 4,000 policemen will be deployed in Metro Manila, particularly in churches and places where people gather.

Simbang Gabi, which has always been an important tradition to Filipinos, is part of preparations for the birth of Jesus.

“Ang ating pong mga celebration o mga pagdiriwang na Misa de Gallo ay paghahanda hindi lang sa darating na kapaskuhan , dahil parang ito na rin yung mismong novena leading to Christmas day. Most importantly ito na rin yung ating devotion sa ating Mahal na Ina,” said Father Earl Valdez, Quiapo Church spokesperson.

(Our celebration or the Misa de Gallo is held in preparation not just of the Christmas season but this is also a (nine-day) novena that lead to Christmas Day. Most importantly, this is also an expression of our devotion to our Blessed Mother.)

The anticipated Simbang Gabi in Manila Cathedral started at 8 p.m. Thursday tonight until December 23.

The Misa de Gallo or dawn masses will start tomorrow at 4:30 a.m. until December 24. The first dawn mass will be led by Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose F. Advincula.
