NDRRMC: Over 400K affected by shear line rains, 29 reported dead


Twenty-nine persons have been reported to have died due to the heavy rains and floods that hit portions of the Visayas and Mindanao over the past days due to the shear line, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported on Wednesday night.

According to its 6 p.m. situational report, the NDRRMC said six deaths were recorded in Region 5, three in Region 8, two in Region 9, and 18 in Region 10. Four fatalities have been confirmed while 25 remained for validation.

Ten persons have been reported while 25 persons are still missing, the agency added.

The NDRRMC reported a total of 105,971 families or 407,224 individuals were affected by the floods and landslides.

Of the figures, 21,763 families or 86,337 are staying inside 314 evacuation centers while 15,144 families, or 70,096 persons are in areas outside the temporary shelters.

Damaged houses in MIMAROPA, Region 6, Region 8, Region 9, Region 10, Region 11, CARAGA, and BARMM now stand at 3,291. Of these, 2,762 were partially damaged while 529 were totally damaged.

Total losses to agriculture are currently at P206,489,170 while the total damages to infrastructure are now at P51,550,000.

Meanwhile, two roads and four bridges are still impassable in Regions 10 and 11.

Power outages still persist in three cities and municipalities affected by the floods and landslides while four areas in MIMAROPA and Region 10 do not have water supplies.

Seven domestic flights in Region 5 and CARAGA were canceled, the NDRRMC reported. 11 seaports are still not operational, it added.

A total of 67 classes and work were suspended in MIMAROPA and Region 5.

According to the NDRRMC, the national government extended assistance worth P35,591,115.29 to the affected victims.

Several areas in Visayas and Mindanao were flooded on Christmas Day on Sunday due to the effects of the shear line, the weather system formed by the meeting between a cold front and a warmer front.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said a low pressure area located east of Surigao del Sur will bring rain showers over Palawan, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, and Davao Region on Wednesday. —NB, GMA Integrated News
