Over 2,600 errant cops faced sanctions in 2022 —PNP

More than 2,600 errant cops received penalties including dismissal from the service in 2022, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Monday.

“Mahigit 2,000 nga pong police ang nabigyan ng iba't ibang penalty simula po sa dismissal from the service, suspension, demotion, meron pa pong forfeiture of salary, restriction to units,” PNP public information office chief Police Colonel Redrico Maranan said in a televised public briefing.

(Over 2,000 police personnel faced different penalties ranging from dismissal from the service, suspension, demotion, and even forfeiture of salary and restriction to units.)

Based on data from the PNP's Directorate for Personnel and Records Management (DPRM), such sanctions were imposed on these personnel due to administrative cases as a direct result of violation of PNP rules and regulations, or involvement in criminal activities.

Of the total number of delinquent personnel, 584 were dismissed from the service, 164 were demoted in rank, and 1,225 were meted with suspension terms.

Also, 456 were “reprimanded”, 117 were meted with salary forfeiture penalties, 26 were restricted to quarters, and 63 were denied of some privileges, according to the PNP.

Dismissed police officers were found administratively liable in 321 AWOL cases, 42 for drug use, 15 for failure to attend court duty, 20 for violence against women, and others for involvement in criminal cases for murder, homicide, carnapping, illegal drugs, robbery extortion and rape.

In 2023, the PNP expects that its personnel would be more disciplined as these sanctions showed that the police organization’s leadership is serious in implementing “disciplinary machinery,” Maranan said. —KG, GMA Integrated News
