PNP: Violence against women, children cases top charges filed vs. policemen

Cases of violence against women and their children have topped the charges which have been filed against police officers based on complaints before the PNP Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement group since last year.

According to Emil Sumangil's exclusive report on "24 Oras", out of the 42 warrants of arrest the courts issued since 2022, 24 police officers have been arrested for violating the Anti-VAWC Law.

The Anti-VAWC Law covers various acts of violence such as physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse which include neglecting financial obligations to their family.

“Minsan may iba pang pamilya, du'n kinukulang. Kasi nagiging dalawa ‘yung kaldero, kinakapos ng pang suporta,” PNP-IMEG Director Police Brig. Gen. Warren De Leon said.

(Sometimes they have another family, and they start falling short of providing for their needs. With two families to feed, they start failing to provide support.)

De Leon said all the accused are police non-commissioned officers who failed to provide financial support. He said going after the erring police officers was part of the PNP’s reformation program.

“Kung tutuusin, tinaas na ang sahod ng pulis. Naka-design ‘yun sa isang pamilya lang. 'Wag ka na dodoble. Kung wala kang ibang source of income mo, 'wag ka nang dodoble ng pamilya,” De Leon said.
