DOH, UP to establish Institute of Health Promotion

The Department of Health (DOH) and the University of the Philippines-National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH) on Monday tied up for the creation of an institute to strengthen health promotion in the country.

DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire, UP Manila Chancellor Carmencita Padilla, and UP-NIH executive director Eva Maria Cutiongco-Dela Paz inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the initiative.

The MOU aims to enforce health promotion, enabling DOH to provide funding to UPM-NIH to conduct health promotion research, contribute to evidence-informed policy advocacy, and advance relevant research and advocacy skills.

These will be possible through the establishment of the Institute of Health Promotion, according to DOH.

They also partnered on the expansion of the National Practice Guideline Program in a bid to strengthen the partnership between UP-NIH and DOH for evidence reviews, clinical practice guidelines development, health research, and capacity building.

In a statement, Vergeire stressed how research collaborations could transform the country’s health systems towards Universal Health Care.

“Through the implementation of science, which aims to understand the barriers to agile adoption of evidence into policy and practice, we will be able to develop appropriate interventions that will facilitate improved policy development and implementation,” she said.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
