BuCor releases 580 inmates as part of efforts to decongest PH jails


The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Thursday released 580 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from various prisons and penal farms as government efforts continue to decongest the country's jails.

According to BuCor, 168 PDLs were from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP). Of this, 123 were from the maximum security prison, and two were from the minimum security prison.

BuCor data also showed that 159 were from the Davao Prison and Penal Farm while 46 were from the Correctional Institute of Women.

Meanwhile, BuCor said 353 of the PDLs were released on parole, 102 served their sentences with good conduct time allowance (GCTA), and 61 were acquitted.

BuCor chief Gregorio Catapang Jr. led the culminating activity at the NBP. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and Public Attorney’s Office Chief Persida Acosta were also in attendance. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
