NGCP lifts red alert status of Luzon Grid, yellow alert remains

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Monday night lifted the red alert status of the Luzon Grid earlier than scheduled, but the yellow alert status remained.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the red alert for the Luzon Grid was lifted as of 6 p.m. on Monday, but a yellow alert will remain until 8 p.m., as the available capacity was 11,896 megawatts while the peak demand was recorded at 11,093 megawatts.

A red alert status indicates that there is zero ancillary service or that a generation deficiency exists, while a yellow alert status indicates that the grid has thin reserves.

The NGCP earlier said a red alert will be in place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., as five power plants were on forced outage while three others were running on de-rated capacities which translated to 1,354 megawatts unavailable to the grid earlier in the day.

The red alert status prompted rotational brownouts in parts of Metro Manila, Rizal, and Cavite, affecting some 300,000 customers of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), which activated the interruptible load program (ILP) for the de-loading of participants from the grid.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
