Hypertensive diseases 5th leading cause of death in PH in 2022

Hypertensive diseases are the fifth leading cause of death in the Philippines in 2022, data from the Department of Health showed.

According to Saleema Refran's report on "24 Oras", this is despite the decrease in deaths by hypertensive complications from 48,000 in 2021 to 35,000 in 2022.

“Most people are asymptomatic kaya hindi nila alam na mataas yung blood pressure nila. Yung mga sinasabing masakit ang ulo, nahihilo. Pagka kasi nagkaroon na ng sintomas na ganyan, ibig sabihin mataas na talaga yung blood pressure,” Philippine Society of Hypertension President Dr. Dolores Bonzon said.

Those with hypertension are also getting younger, the doctors said.

“Bakit tumataas ang blood pressure sa mga bata? Wala na silang exercise. Palagi na lang nakaupo lalo na nung pandemic puro zoom puro online, nakaupo,” Philippine Society of Hypertension Vice President Dr. Alejandro Diaz said.

“Mga bata pwede ring maging hypertensive lalo na ngayon tumataas yung mga obese na adolescents especially during the pandemic. Nakita sa mga pag-aaral na kapag hypertensive ka nung bata ka, you have a high risk of being hypertensive in your adult age,” Bonzon said. —Sherylin Untalan/NB, GMA Integrated News
