DOJ reviewing legality of Afghans' entry in PH
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is studying whether allowing the temporary stay of Afghan nationals in the Philippines is legal.
Justice spokesman Mico Clavano said Tuesday that the request by the United States to let the foreigners enter the country is undergoing the “necessary research and due diligence.”
“That is still being reviewed by our legal department here. We still have to wait and see kung ano yung magiging resulta ng research nila and that would be reflected in the legal opinion that they would render,” he said.
The United States has requested the Philippines to temporarily house Afghanistan refugees while their special immigration visas are being processed.
Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez earlier said the country's response to the US' request could come out by around July 15.
Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro Jr. said they are still waiting for the word of the DOJ.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
