CHR welcomes PNP's implementation of maximum tolerance for SONA Protests

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Friday welcomed the Philippine National Police's (PNP) statement that it will implement maximum tolerance for protesters for the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

"As an important national event, SONA serves as an opportunity for many groups and individuals to express their views, stances, and grievances on important national issues... It is important for the State to facilitate and provide a space for the exercise of peaceful assembly as this will also demonstrate responsive governance that sincerely listens and engages with diverse groups toward social good," said the CHR.

"We are hopeful that the PNP's statement of assurance will translate to efforts by State forces to protect and facilitate the right to peaceful protest in the same manner that they will endeavor to ensure peace and order," it added.

The CHR also vowed to monitor the protests on Monday to ensure no untoward incidents take place.

Meanwhile, the CHR reminded protesters to follow the requirements for holding their events on Monday, including securing permits and conducting a peaceful assembly.

The PNP on Thursday announced that they will exert maximum tolerance for protesters who will be participating in any rallies during the SONA. Progressive group Bayan said that SONA protests will be bigger this year with thousands of protesters and 50 organizations expected to join. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
