US senator assures PH that America 'squarely behind its oldest treaty ally'

US Senator Tammy Duckworth on Monday relayed to Filipino senators that America was “squarely behind” the Philippines in protecting its sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea (WPS), Senate Juan Miguel Zubiri said.

“She shares our strong resolve to pursue Freedom of Navigation and the Rule of Law as dictated by the UNCLOS. She relayed that the US is squarely behind their oldest treaty ally when it comes to protecting our sovereignty in the WPS,” Zubiri told reporters.

Duckworth was in the Philippines for a visit, and, accompanied by US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson, met with Zubiri, Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda, and Senator Francs Tolentino.

According to Zubiri, Duckworth and Filipino senators discussed the cooperation between the United States and the Philippines in different matters, particularly defense, energy, environment, and trade.

“We thank Sen. Duckworth for the visit, and with her support, we hope to forge stronger ties with the US as we go forward,” Zubiri said. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
