PCG on heightened alert for 2023 opening of classes
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) placed its personnel under heightened alert status to ensure the security and safety of passengers amid the opening of classes.
In a statement, the PCG said its commandant Admiral Artemio Abu ordered to impose the status on all Coast Guard districts, stations, at sub-stations from August 22 to September 1, 2023.
The PCG will monitor the expected influx of passengers and operation of vessels, which will undergo strict inspections by Coast Guard sea marshals.
Help desks will be set up at port terminals with the help of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).
Additional Coast Guard K9 units will also be deployed to better monitor possible illegal activities in concerned areas.
PCG personnel will conduct patrols in their respective areas of responsibility and ensure enough deployment of lifeguards and safety equipment in tourism spots.
A contingengy plan is also in place in case of accidents and emergencies, the PCG said.
Abu said the PCG is aiming to have "zero casualty incident."
Classes for School Year 2023-2024 are set to open on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA Integrated News
