Medico-legal report on slapped student's death out in a week


The results of the medico-legal examination on the death of the 14-year-old who died after getting slapped in school by his teacher is expected to be released in a week.

Hector Sorra, the chief of the Medico-Legal Division Chief of thje PNP Forensics Group, said the review on histopathology which uses a microscope for findings takes 30 days.

He said the division would expedite the process to release the results within the week.

Sorra aid the division may only release a report on Gumikib’s death once it completes the review of the CT scan and histopathology.

“Sa lungs niya may nakita kami na pulmonary tuberculosis (We detected pulmonary tuberculosis in his lungs),” Sorra said.

Gumikib died days after allegedly being slapped by a teacher at Peñafrancia Elementary School.

His death certificate showed that he died due to global brain edema, with an antecedent cause of acute intraparenchymal hemorrhage or bleeding into the brain tissue.

Indicated in the document are other significant conditions contributing to his death including presumptive pulmonary tuberculosis and child physical abuse.

Elena Minggoy, the victim’s mother, said she was not aware that her son was suffering from any illness before his death.

However, she said Gumikib exhibited several symptoms when he was rushed to the hospital including headache, eye pain, vomiting, and earache.

The elementary student also vomited blood in the emergency room and was later diagnosed with a lung disease.

A fact-finding investigation team has been formed to look into the incident, the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division Office said on Tuesday. —NB, GMA Integrated News
