PAF improves defensive capabilities with new radar system from Japan

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) on Wednesday bolstered its defensive capabilities after it acquired a new Advance Air Surveillance Radar system (ASRS) from Japan.

The FPS-3ME Advance Air Surveillance Radar (ASRS) was unveiled in a turnover ceremony at the Wallace Air Station in San Fernando City, La Union.

The equipment is part of the Air Surveillance Radar System Acquisition Project with Japan that includes three fixed long-range surveillance radars and one mobile air surveillance radar.

"This project is a leap forward in the Philippines' defense infrastructure and will bolster the country's air and maritime surveillance, enhancing its readiness and response mechanisms," the PAF said in a statement.

The ASRS will be operated and maintained by the 580th Aircraft Control and Warning Wing led by its commander, Brigadier Geneal Ronnie Petinglay.

Nishiwaki Osamu, Assistant Commissioner of Japan’s Ministry of Defense Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency, expressed Japan's commitment to support the build-up of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Meanwhile, National Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. emphasized the continuous efforts and commitment of the Philippine government in modernizing and fortifying the nation's defense mechanisms to benefit the country and its security landscape.—RF, GMA Integrated News
