Marcos establishes College of Medicine in La Union State University

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has signed a law that establishes a college of medicine in the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-South La Union Campus (DMMMSU-SLUC).

Through Republic Act No. 1197, DMMMSU-SLUC will soon offer a Doctor of Medicine Program, including an Integrated Liberal Arts and Medicine Program.

The program will consist of basic science and clinical courses with the goal “to develop a corps of professional physicians to strengthen the healthcare system of the country.”

According to the Presidential Communications Office, RA No. 11978 also aims to respond to the human resource development needs of the Province of La Union and the Ilocos Region.

Meanwhile, the President also signed Republic Act 11980 which expands the curricular offerings of Bulacan State University.

“To this end, the Bulacan State University (BulSu) and its constituent units shall be strengthened as a state university to enhance its capability to provide accessible quality education,” Section 2 of RA No. 11980 stated.

The BulSu is mandated to provide advanced education, higher technological, professional courses and training programs for courses offered such as engineering and technology, arts and sciences, education, agriculture and industrial fields, accountancy, business and public administration, and medicine and allied health courses.

Other courses include hotel and restaurant management, tourism, aeronautics, artificial intelligence and robotics, law, nontraditional courses and other relevant fields of study, and will also undertake research and extension services and production activities, supporting Bulacan and Central Luzon’s socioeconomic development.

Marcos had also signed Republic Act No. 11977 which established the Pampanga State Agricultural University-Floridablanca Campus in the Municipality of Floridablanca.

This will allow the university to offer short-term, technical-vocational, undergraduate, and graduate courses within its areas of competency and specialization.

“The PSAU-Floridablanca Campus shall be mandated to undertake research and extension services, and production activities in support of the socio-economic development and to provide progressive leadership in these areas,” the law stated.  —VAL, GMA Integrated News
