Luzon, Visayas grids on yellow alert on Friday —NGCP


The Luzon and Visayas grids will be placed on yellow alert on Friday, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

In an advisory, the NGCP said Luzon grid will be on yellow alert from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The available capacity in Luzon is 14,535 megawatts (MW) while the expected peak demand is 13,751 MW.

According to the NGCP, four plants have been on forced outage since 2023, four between January and March 2024, and 14 since April 2024. Two others are running on derated capacity.

"[These make up] for a total of 1,512.7 MW unavailable to the grid," the NGCP said.

On the other hand, the Visayas grid will be placed on yellow alert from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The region has an available Capacity of 2,791 MW as against an expected peak demand of 2,530 MW.

"[One] plant has been on forced outage since 2022, 2 since 2023, 2 between January and March 2024, and 14 since April 2024; while 8 others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 604.1MW unavailable to the grid," the NGCP said.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
