PNP heightens security measures for holidays

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Sunday its units nationwide have been directed to intensify visibility through regular patrols and the deployment of additional personnel in high-traffic areas as the holiday season approaches.

PNP chief Police General Rommel Marbil said that the presence of uniformed personnel in public areas such as malls, markets, and transport hubs amid the holiday season is part of the PNP’s mission to ensure public safety.

“Christmas is a season of joy and giving, but it is also a period when criminal elements may exploit public vulnerability. The PNP is committed to making this season safe and secure for all Filipinos,” he said in a statement.

According to the PNP, quick response teams will also be on standby to immediately address incidents.

Likewise, the PNP’s Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) is also looking at curbing online scams and fraud that proliferate during the Christmas season.

The police force is also preparing for possible political activities, including the upcoming protest of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) against moves to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte.

“Our mandate is clear: to ensure public safety under any circumstances. The PNP is a professional and apolitical organization. We are here to serve and protect all Filipinos, regardless of the political climate,” Marbil added.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Friday it was also coordinating with other agencies in preparation for the INC rally. —Giselle Ombay/KG, GMA Integrated News
