Wet firecrackers could still pose danger, group warns

There is a risk of wet firecrackers self-igniting after they are dried, so people should be careful of their disposal, a group warned ahead of the New Year's Eve celebrations.

According to Chino Gaston’s report in 24 Oras on Thursday, the Philippine Pyrotechnics Manufacturers and Dealers Association Inc. explained that a chemical reaction can occur when the damp powder inside the firecracker dries out.

“Kasi mayroon po siyang chemical na kasama doon, na habang natutuyo magse-self-explosion,” said association president Arlene Santiago.

(Because it has a chemical inside that when it dries up, it will explode by itself.)

Because of this, tossing out wet firecrackers is not as safe as one might think, and firecrackers should be fully submerged in water until the powder has disintegrated.

The Department of Health (DOH) also reminded the public to avoid using firecrackers during New Year’s Eve celebrations. If they must, these should be lit in wide, cool places, far from fire, confined spaces, and children.

Although there has been an increase in sales in firecrackers this year, the sale of illegal firecrackers online has also been prevalent.
