Workers Party bats for P200 legislated wage hike on 62nd anniversary

The Workers and Peasants Party (WPP) on the occasion of its 62nd anniversary expressed its support for the proposed P200 legislated wage hike that the House of Representatives passed on Monday.

In a statement, the party also renewed its commitment to end the practice of contractualization and the right of Filipino workers to organize unions.

“In line with its long-standing advocacy, WPP strongly supports a P200 nationwide wage increase to address inflation and as a step towards living wages, an end to 'Endo' (contractualization) and stronger security of tenure to prevent unjust layoffs and workers’ right to unionize and engage in collective bargaining negotiations without fear of harassment or termination,” the WPP said in a statement.

“As the May 2025 elections approach, the party urges voters to elect true labor champions to the Senate who will fight for fair wages, secure jobs, and stronger labor rights," the party said.

The House of Representatives on Monday passed on second reading the P200 daily wage hike for private sector workers.

The Senate passed a P100 daily wage hike for private sector workers in March 2024.

Congress will be in session this week before adjourning on February 7 to give way to the campaign period for Eleksyon 2025.

Congress will resume session from June 2 to 13 before the 19th Congress ends.

The WPP urged Filipino workers, farmers, and labor advocates to support the senatorial candidacies of Atty. Sonny Matula and Muslim leader Sultan Subair Mustapha who are advocates of the wage increases.

“We have fought for workers and farmers for 62 years, and now we need leaders in the Senate who will continue this fight. Let’s bring Matula and Mustapha to the Senate and push for genuine labor reforms!” WPP chairperson and lawyer Ariel Arias said.

“Let us stand together in the fight for fair wages, job security, and stronger workers’ rights,” the WPP added.

WPP said Matula, a seasoned labor lawyer and union leader, is a relentless advocate for higher wages, job security, and the protection of workers’ rights.

Mustapha, on the other hand, was described by WPP as a respected Muslim leader who “has dedicated his career to uplifting the economic conditions of marginalized workers, advocating for peace in Mindanao, and promoting inclusive labor policies.” –BM/NB, GMA Integrated News
