Senate honors PH cinema icon Gloria Romero

The Senate adopted Monday a resolution commemorating the life and legacy of veteran actress Gloria Romero, who passed away on January 25 at 91 years old.

Filed on January 27, Resolution 1287 was sponsored by Senator Grace Poe.

In her privileged speech, Poe described Romero as a “cultural institution."

“Gloria Romero was not just an actress; she’s the actress. She was a cultural institution, an artist whose contribution to the entertainment industry has left an indelible mark on our nation's cultural identity,” Poe said.

The senator also said Romero was a “trailblazer” as she helped “define the golden age of Philippine cinema.”

“Her life and work reminded us that genuine artistry is tireless and her sheer dedication serves as a model for all of us to emulate,” Poe said.

Hailed as the "Queen of Philippine Cinema," Romero won various acting awards throughout her 70-year career in showbiz.

Among her memorable performances in film are "Magnifico," "Dalagang Ilocana," "Tarima," "Tanging Yaman," and "Rainbow's Sunset."

She also played several roles in GMA shows, including “Daig Kayo ng Lola ko,” “Kambal, Karibal,” and “Munting Heredera.”

In April 2024, she was named by the Film Development Council of the Philippines among its Lifetime Achievement Honorees. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News
