Vince Dizon appointed as new DOTr secretary


Vince Dizon has been appointed as the new secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed on Thursday.

Dizon, former president of Bases and Conversion Development Authority (BCDA), then-deputy chief implementer of the National Task Force Against COVID-19 and former presidential adviser for flagship programs and projects, will replace DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista.

Bersamin said this will be effective on February 21, 2025.

"He is already authorized by the Office of the President to start the transition at the DOTr in coordination with the team of Secretary Jaime Bautista, who has resigned due to health reasons," Bersamin said in a message to reporters.

In a statement, the DOTr confirmed that Bautista is stepping down to give attention to his health.

"Sec. Bautista thanked the President for the opportunity to work in government which Bautista considered his most challenging stint," it said.

It added that Bautista also called his first government post "most enriching, having served with utmost integrity."

"Sec. Bautista looks forward to a smooth transition, after which a much needed vacation to recuperate from two and a half years of intense public service," the DOTr said.

Lawmakers laud appointment

Several lawmakers welcomed the appointment of Dizon and vouched for his expertise and experience.

Senator Grace Poe, vice chairman of the Senate public services committee, thanked Dizon for accepting the appointment and "taking on such an enormous task at this critical time."

"We are confident that with his skills and experience, he could fast track the urgently needed reforms and projects under the department. The new DOTR chief can count on our support in bringing relief to our commuting public and lasting solutions to our transportation sector," Poe said.

Senator JV Ejercito, sponsor of the DOTr's budget in the Senate, said he is looking forward to working with Dizon "to fast track the completion of major infrastructure projects that will benefit millions of Filipinos."

Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada expressed confidence that Dizon "will be able to deliver and effectively address the pressing transportation challenges we face" given his "impressive track record in government service."

"With his experience as a presidential adviser on flagship programs and projects, as well as his role at the BCDA, Dizon is a strong choice to lead the Department of Transportation," Estrada said .

"He has demonstrated excellent leadership and expertise in urban planning, private sector engagement, and infrastructure development, which align perfectly with the responsibilities of the DOTr. I believe he will bring the much-needed efficiency and modernization to our transportation system," he added.

Senator Joel Villanueva said Dizon will be "invaluable in leading the department."

"We look forward to working with the agency under Secretary Dizon’s leadership, particularly in tackling the country’s traffic challenges, ensuring safe and efficient transport, and advancing transportation infrastructure which are vital in driving the country’s economic progress," he said.

“President Marcos made the right decision in appointing Secretary Vince Dizon. He has a proven track record in infrastructure development and the expertise to ensure the completion of the administration’s ambitious transport projects,” House Deputy Majority Leader Franz Pumaren said in a separate statement.
