Gringo believes Sara Duterte impeachment a 'waste of time'

Former Senator Gregorio "Gringo" Honasan, who is seeking a comeback in the upper chamber in the 2025 elections, said Friday the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte and moves to remove her from office are a waste of time.

Speaking at a forum in San Juan, Honasan said he agreed with the initial position of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on efforts to impeach the vice president.

"I agree with the President who said early on (that) this might be a waste of time… not only resources. Aren't there more important issues and problems to attend to? And I want to relate this to the basic needs… any issue now we can relate to the real problems in our country which are food, clothing, shelter, education," he said.

"Is this going to unite the country? I don't think so. Dahil lalo na on the eve of the coming May elections (Especially now on the eve of the coming May elections) where we should be listening to platforms and programs of the candidates… Do we really have time? Do we have the resources to spare to go through this process?" he went on.

Honasan is among the senatorial candidates of Marcos-Duterte's "UniTeam" during the 2022 national and local elections.

At the same time, Honasan, who led failed uprisings against the Corazon Aquino administration as a former military officer, dismissed the idea of another People Power movement.

He stressed that the Philippines is becoming unstable and that no investors would be attracted if the situation worsened.

"Hindi na kailangan na umabot sa gan'un at habang maaga magkaisa na tayo, political will at asikasuhin na natin 'yung mga totoong problema. Hindi 'yung problemang dala lamang ng politika," he said.

(We don't have to come to that point. While we still have time, let's unite. Let's show political will and address our real problems, not problems brought about by politics.)
