SC tells Comelec, Miru to comment on petition seeking documents

Comelec, Miru asked to comment on petition seeking documents

The Supreme Court (SC) has directed the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Miru Systems to comment on a petition seeking for them to disclose documents related to the contract for the 2025 midterm polls.

According to SC spokesperson Atty. Camille Ting, the high court required them to comment on the petition within a non-extendible period of 10 days from notice.

The petitioners asked the Court to declare Comelec’s alleged failure to fully act on their request for information a grave abuse of discretion. They also asked the SC to correct Comelec's alleged failure by compelling it to provide the requested information.

Meanwhile, they also asked the Court to compel Miru to disclose the requested information.

The petitioners are members of the Right to Know, Right Now Coalition (R2KRN), the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR), the Philippine Press Institute, journalists, and academics.

In a statement, Miru said it had previously addressed R2KRN’s request for information ''as part of our commitment to the integrity of the 2025 elections.''

Miru added that Comelec also provided access to information on the joint venture through live-streamed events and updates on its website and social media platforms.

Miru urged R2KRN and other parties to view these sources of information and visit the Comelec warehouse in Biñan, Laguna to check the machines.

"Given that all machines have fully been delivered and are securely stored in Comelec's warehouse and that our project continues to be on track of all scheduled milestones, we believe that we have shown our ability to provide a successful electoral system,'' Miru said.  — with Mariel Celine Serquiña/BAP/VBL, GMA Integrated News
