BFP: Fire incidents down by 43% in 1Q of 2025

The BFP said that there were fewer fire incidents in the country in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said Tuesday that there were fewer fire incidents in the country in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

In a public briefing, BFP spokesperson Annalee Atienza said there were 2,442 fire incidents from Jan. 1 to March 4.

She noted that the recent data is 43% lower, with 4,316 incidents.

BFP earlier reported that electrical issues remained the most common cause of fire.

This, as Atienza reminded the public to be responsible when using electric appliances.

“Siguraduhin natin kung ito may kalumaan na at may sira na ng bahagya; ang suggestion bumili ng bago. Wag na lang pag-tiyagaan na tipirin, i-reprair dahil mas malaki ang magagasto natin," Atienza said.

(Let's be careful in using old appliances. If they need to be replaced, buy new ones or go for repairs because they might cost you more in the long run.)

"Pinakamasaklap may nasasawi po sa ating pamilya,” she added.

(It might even cost the life of your loved ones.)

“Ngayong Fire Prevention Month, maging pro-active tayo. Wag na po nating antayin na magkaroon ng sunog tsaka tayo mag re-responde,” she added

(This Fire Prevention Month, let's be proactive. Do not wait around for it to happen.)

Atienza also gave the following fire prevention tips:

  • Educate your family on how to switch off the circuit breaker of your house
  • Do not use octopus wires or connected extension cords
  • Asses your home’s electrical wires and overall structure
  • Do not leave your cooking unattended
