Sara Duterte calls for stronger laws, unity to protect Filipino women
Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday called for stronger legislation and a united, multisectoral approach to ensure the protection of Filipino women from violence and abuse.
In her message on International Women's Day and National Women's Month, the Vice President urged the nation to work together to strengthen laws, improve access to justice, and support survivors of gender-based violence.
"Every sector of society—government, private institutions, civil society, and individuals—must work together to break the cycle of abuse and exploitation," Duterte said.
Calling on Filipinos to challenge "deeply rooted norms" that enable violence, Duterte said, "The fight for women's rights is not just about closing economic and political gaps—it is about ensuring that every woman and child is protected, heard, and allowed to thrive."
She highlighted that Filipino women are "at the forefront of change" in government service, innovation, and in strengthening communities.
"Yet, we cannot ignore the alarming reality that violence against women and children and human trafficking continue to threaten the safety and dignity of many," Duterte said.
Gender-based violence, including domestic abuse, online exploitation, and trafficking, remains as a persistent barrier to women's empowerment, the Vice President said.
"Together, let us build a future where no woman fears for her safety, where every girl can pursue her dreams without fear of violence, and where equality is not just a goal, but a lived reality," Duterte said.
Meanwhile, in his International Women's Day message, Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero urged Filipinos to keep fighting for social equality and women's rights.
"Patuloy nating isulong ang pagkakaroon ng isang makataong lipunan na lilikha ng mga pantay na oportunidad para sa lahat nang hindi nakabase sa kasarian, estadong panlipunan, paniniwalang pangrelihiyon, at kinaaanibang pulitika," Escudero said.
(Let us continue to push for the establishment of a humane society that will create equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender, social status, religious beliefs, and political affiliation.)
"Isang maalab na pagpupugay para sa lahat ng mga kababaihang Pilipino sa kanilang kontribusyon sa pagtataguyod ng ating bayan," he continued.
