Here is what the ICC detention center looks like

Former President Rodrigo Duterte was flown off to The Hague in The Netherlands after an International Criminal Court-issued warrant of arrest was served to him on Tuesday.

Upon arrival in The Hague, Duterte is expected to be brought to the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention center. It is located within a Dutch prison complex in Scheveningen on the outskirts of The Hague.

The detention center was built to "hold in safe, secure and humane custody" those persons detained under the authority of the ICC.

The ICC Registrar has overall responsibility for all aspects of management of the detention center, including security and order. It also makes all decisions relating thereto, as stipulated in Regulation 90 of the Regulations of the Court.

While inside the detention center, the detained persons have access to fresh air, recreational time and sports activities. They also have access to library books, news and television.

Further, detained persons have access to computer facilities to work on their own cases. According to the ICC, each detained person has a computer in his or her cell. This is linked to one specific computer at the court, which only his or her defense team may access. Detainees will also be given the opportunity to undergo computer training, if needed.

The detained individuals are entitled to visits by a minister or spiritual advisor of their religion or belief, for which an area within the detention center is allocated.

The Registrar gives specific attention to visits by the family and visits by the wife or partner of the detained persons; and may take measures to assist the family in the necessary procedures thereof, if required.

It is also ensured that detained persons are provided with suitably prepared food that satisfies in quality and quantity the standards of dietetics and modern hygiene.

According to the ICC, detained persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted of crimes under the jurisdiction of the ICC, they do not serve their sentences at the detention center as it is not a facility made for the purposes of managing a regime of convicted prisoners.

Instead, they are transferred to a prison outside of The Netherlands to serve their time, subject to an agreement between the ICC and the State of enforcement.

The Duterte camp has maintained that the ICC has no jurisdiction over the Philippines after it withdrew from the Rome Statute, or the treaty that established the entity.

However, the ICC argued that it "retains jurisdiction with respect to alleged crimes that occurred on the territory of the Philippines while it was a State Party, from 1 November 2011 up to and including 16 March 2019." — VDV, GMA Integrated News
