Senators started fitting impeachment robes — Senate secretary

The Senate is already preparing the robes that will be used by the senator-judges in the forthcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

This was disclosed by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and was confirmed by Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr on Friday.

“About two weeks ago, SP (Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero) gave (a) go signal to coordinate with the senators para sa (for the) robe measurements,” Bantug said in a text message.

“Same color and design… maroon. Same nung [during] the last Corona trial,” he added.

Escudero earlier set a tentative date on the start of Duterte’s impeachment trial on July 30.

The House impeached Duterte on February 5, with over 200 lawmakers endorsing the complaint. The Articles of Impeachment were transmitted to the Senate the same day, but the upper chamber adjourned without addressing the case.

Meanwhile, Duterte has filed a Supreme Court petition challenging the validity of the impeachment complaint.

Lawyers from Mindanao and other groups have also asked the SC to stop the trial, calling the complaint defective.

Another petition seeks to compel the Senate to convene as an impeachment court immediately. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
