Salceda suggests buying modern jeepneys from PH manufacturers
Albay 2nd District Representative Joey Salceda said Monday expressed willingness to discuss the Ways and Means Committee findings that he heads on the government’s Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP), formerly known as the PUV modernization program.
This came after the Department of Transportation (DOTr) created a special committee to review the PTMP.
In a letter to DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon on Monday, Salceda suggested choosing the most affordable procurement of public utility jeepneys, which are being offered by domestic manufacturers.
He also raised alarm on the alleged rebates of about P400,000 per unit given to heads of transport cooperatives in exchange for agreeing to procure certain jeepney units.
Salaceda said public transportation systems should be inclusive, especially to persons with disabilities and senior citizens.
“We must minimize the gaps between public transportation routes,” Salceda said.
He added that route rationalization can be done through transport planning software.
The lawmaker also suggested “decent” transport routes in airports in the country, such as the Bicol International Airport.
Based on a special order signed by Dizon, the committee is tasked to consult with various stakeholders, evaluate and review the current status and progress of the PTMP, and identify issues and concerns relevant to the program.
It is also expected to submit its recommendations to the Office of the Secretary within one week from the issuance of the order and perform other duties as may be necessary to fast-track the program implementation.
On March 24, DOTr expressed openness to some changes in the PTMP.
Dizon said the agency will present a “solution” in two weeks after its talks with more stakeholders. —Mariel Celine Serquiña
